NEAAU 13U Super Division Champion Seadogs
June 30, 2008
The 13 BLUES captured the NEAAU Championship with an 8-2 win over the Mass Pride NATIONAL on Wednesday at Strong Field, concluding a perfect 6-0 run in the championship series. "It was truly a total team effort. All year long we've received contributions from every member of our roster, coaching staff and all of our parents," stated Coach Adams. "We've got plenty of work left to do with the AAU Nationals ahead, but for now we'll really enjoy this."
Meanwhile the 15U Seadogs romped through the tourney with a 5-0 record, winning the first four in the ten-run rule mercy fashion. In the final game they topped the Central Mass Smash in a game suspended due to severe weather on Sunday in Worcester with the 'Dogs holding an 8-3 lead. They returned and concluded the game on Tuesday with Jesse Loughlin retiring the final eight batters to clinch the crown. The final score was 9-4.
Add these two crowns to the 12U BLUE championship and the Seadogs program now has three NEAAU 2008 Championships.
Below are the results.
Seadogs 8, Mass Pride NATIONAL 2
The 13U Seadogs BLUE team captured the NEAAU 13U Super
Division Championship on Wednesday in East Bridgewater, defeating the
Mass Pride National 8-2. The
Dogs used outstanding pitching (Vinny Scifo – complete
game), defense, and aggressive baserunning all night long to help in the
win. Scifo kept
the Pride hitters off balance with a mixture of excellent fast balls and
breaking balls. Trailing 1-0 in the second inning, Scifo walked
and stole second. Johnny Adams laid down
a sacrifice bunt, advancing Scifo to third,
and then Tommy Landry fought off a tough two strike pitch,
grounding out but delivering the tying run. In the fourth, with the score
tied at one, Adams led off with a single and eventually
scored on a perfect two out base hit bunt by Danny Dougherty.
In the fifth, the Dogs added two more runs on
Cam Hanley and Sean Heelen RBIs, making
the score 4-1 after five innings. In the sixth they put the game away with
four more runs. Landry led off
with a towering double to center field and Donny May delivered
him with a pinch-hit single. Justin Lloyd then followed
with his own booming double to deliver another run and Joe Manni was
next with a two-run single to
right. Todd MacDonald was great on the bases and played
his usual excellent defense. The defense was led by third baseman Kevin
Murphy and
shortstop Adams, each making several plays. The Dogs also
turned a beautiful 5-4-3 double play, with Sammy Falkson making
the great turn at second.
Tim Sullivan also played excellent at second base and Joey
Guarino made
a good catch in left field and made a great attempt almost snaring another.
Seadogs 9, Central Mass Smash 4
The 'Dogs jumped out to a lead in the championship game with a pair of runs in the first. Troy Salvatore singled, stole second and scored on a one-out single by Jeff Cavanaro. Cavanaro would come around to score on a two-out double by Phil Sciretta. The lead jumped to 5-0 in the three-run Seadog third. Nick Barker singled and scored on a Cavanaro double. Kyle Silva (RBI), Sciretta and Matt Goreham (RBI) would all follow with singles. The Smash narrowed the lead to 5-2 with a pair of their own in the fourth. The Seadogs responded with three more in the top of the fifth keyed by a Salvatore double, a Cavanaro RBI groundout and another Sciretta two-out RBI hit. The Smash scored once in the bottom half and had runners on first and third with one out before severe wind, lightning and eventually rain flooded the field. That left the game suspended with the score 8-3. When the Seadogs returned on Tuesday, starter Phil Sciretta (4 1/3 IP, 2 ER, 4 hits, 1 BB, 1 K) was replaced by Jesse Loughlin. Loughlin's first pitch was a hard liner up the middle which he snared and then threw over Goreham's head at first in his haste to make an inning ending and rally snuffing double play. That made the score 8-4 with a runner on third. Loughlin then induced the three hole hitter to fly to Silva in right to end the threat. Loughlin then proceeded to retire the final six batters in order. In his 2 2/3 innings, he retired all eight batters that he faced with two strikeouts. Another Cavanaro RBI double plated the ninth run. Salvatore, Cavanaro (4 RBI) and Sciretta (2 RBI) each had three hits in the twelve hit attack.
Seadogs 12, Baystate Eagles 2
In the semi-final game in Worcester on Sunday the Dogs entered the bottom of the fourth hitless and trailing 2-0 before a four run fourth and an eight run fifth put the 'Dogs in the finals. Troy Salvatore led the fourth with a rocket triple to left and scored on a Nick Barker groundout. A Cavanaro single and a Silva walk preceded a clutch, two-out, two-run single by Matt Goreham, giving the Seadogs a 3-2 lead.. Joe Zanca 's RBI single made it a 4-2 game. The fifth saw RBI hits from Matt Sheehan, Cavanaro (2 RBI), Sciretta (2 RBI), Goreham and John Mildner (2 RBI) to end it. Goreham (5 IP, 1 BB, 7 K's) got the win with five strong innings of work.
Seadogs 15, Royals Baseball Academy 2
In the second game Saturday the Seadogs closed out the Pool and advanced to the final four with a ten run first inning to lead to the five inning victory, avenging their only loss of the season. The fifteen hit attack had multi-hit Seadogs throughout, led again by lead-off hitter Salvatore (3 for 4, 3 runs, 2 RBI, double).
Seadogs 17, Hanover Indians 3
On Saturday at Massasoit the 'Dogs ran roughshod over the Indians in a mercy-shortened event. Salvatore, Jeff Cavanaro, Phil Sciretta, Matt Goreham and John Mullen each had a pair of hits in the 13 hit attack.
Seadogs 10, RI Ramblers 0
The 'Dogs opened the NEAAU Tourney Friday night in Fairhaven as Jesse Loughlin tossed six strong innings (6 IP, 4 H, 1 BB, 11 K's) and the grinding offense was led by Troy Salvatore (3 for 4, double, 3 runs, RBI) and Nick Barker (2 for 4, 2 runs, double).
The 16U BLUE advanced to the finals of the NEAAU Tourney before bowing to the Scorpions 11-8.
Seadogs 8, Legends 2
Zach Smith, Barrett O'Neill and Drew
Cataldo combined on the win. Chris King (2-3
double, RBI), Joey Hickey (2-3, 2 runs), Mike
Dodakian (2-3 double, RBI) and Matt Rodriguez (2-3,
triple, RBI) paced
the offense
Navigators 8, Seadogs 7
In a nine inning barn burner that featured seven lead changes, two in
extra innings alone, the Seadogs came up just short. Zach Smith was
great in
relief.
Smith went four solid innings allowing no runs to allow the Seadogs to
take a 5-4 lead in the bottom of the 6th. The Navs, however, scored
twice in the 9th and the Seadogs rally fell short.
Seadogs 7, Frozen Ropes 2
Mike Dodakian pitched a complete game
to get the Seadogs into the final four allowing only two runs and striking
out four. Matt
Burgess and Matt Rodriguez each had
2 RBI.
Seadogs 10, Navigators 9
The Seadogs rallied from 6-2, 8-4, and 9-6 deficits to win another hard fought game. Matt Burgess pitched 3 1/3 innings of relief to get the win. Zach Smith pitched 1 2/3 to record the save. Jordan Berry's seventh inning triple plated Shawn Heide with the game winner. Barrett O'Neill went 4-4 with a game tying two-run run triple in the sixth. Burgess went 2-3 with an RBI triple as well.
Scorpions 11, Seadogs 8
In the NEAAU final the Seadogs ran out of gas and just came up short. After falling down 8-1, Shawn Heide came in and stopped the bleeding to allow the Seadogs to get back in the game. Heide also went 2-3 with a triple and 3 RBI and 2 runs scored. Jordan Berry went 3-4 with 2 runs scored.
The 14U 'Dogs advanced to the finals of the Dugout Dawgs Wooden Bat tourney in Nauset on beautiful Cape Cod before bowing to the NE Ruffnecks 5-4. The second place finish was a solid effort for the Seadogs who have now played 49 games in a very busy season.
Seadogs 7, Worcester Heat 0
On Saturday in the tourney opener at Nauset Regional, veteran Seadog Alex Connolly tossed a complete game shutout against a strong Worcester Heat team which previously finished second in the NEAAU Super Division Tourney. Connolly fanned four and was supported by outstanding defense. A two-run first inning single by Dan King turned out to be all that Connolly would need. Four runs in the seventh provided a nice cushion.
NE Ruffnecks 7, Seadogs 2
The NEAAU Super Division champion Ruffnecks benefited from eleven free passes on their way to victory. Dan King had two of the four Seadog hits with Chris Kingsley and Chris Hoyt collecting the others.
Seadogs 3, Dugout Dawgs 0
Andrew Vandini's (9 K's) complete game shutout was just what the doctor ordered with the Seadogs facing elimination on Sunday morning. A three-run first behind hits from Vandini, Hoyt, Jake Connelly and Will Sullivan proved sufficient.
Seadogs 11, Navigators 8
In a wild, nine inning affair, the Seadogs survived. Starter Mike Baryski, fighting a stomach bug, battled through seven innings. Alex Way came on in extra innings to garner the win. A top of the ninth five run rally was keyed by Matt Connolly (on base four times), Craig Hanley and Baryski.
NE Ruffnecks 5, Seadogs 4
After enjoying a ten minute break after the nine inning battle, the Seadogs again fought to the end. A three run third saw big hits from Brian McCloud, Hanley (triple) and Way as they took a 3-1 lead. The Ruffnecks regained the lead at 4-3 before McCloud squeezed in Sullivan to tie it again in the fourth. Trailing 5-4 in their final at-bat, the Seadogs had runners at first and third when they took their last gasp, finishing second in an excellent tournament with good competition.
