WWBA WRAP-UP (3-3)

#2: Seadogs 6, Rochester (NY) Grays 2

The 16-U Seadogs finished with a .500 record at the WWBA National Tournament held in Georgia. The team finished 3-2 in pool play, finishing second in the five team pool only behind the Franklin (TN) Outlaws who went undefeated through the first four games.

On the pitching side, the Seadogs got wins from Matt Goreham, Jesse Loughlin and Brendan Doonan.

Goreham dazzled in the opening game of the tournament against the Florida Pokers. He threw seven strong innings, giving up just one run on four hits while striking out 13 batters. Goreham was throwing his hardest (90 MPH) late into the game with the score still close and runners in scoring position.

Loughlin walked the first two batters of the game on eight pitches but, settled down to throw a complete-game, striking out five Grays. Doonan threw 5.2 innings in the final game of pool play against the Angels. He gave up just 3 ER, against 4 hits, striking out 11 and walking 4. Troy Salvatore came on for the save, striking out 2 in 1.1 innings of work.

In their best played game of the tournament, the Seadogs lost to the eventual pool-winning Franklin (TN) Outlaws. Phil Sciretta kept the Seadogs in the game throwing 6 innings, giving up 4 earned runs, 7 hits while striking out 5 Outlaws. Franklin came into the game by mercy-ruling their previous two opponents.

At the plate, the Seadogs were led by Demetri Monovoukas. Monovoukas was (4-13) with two doubles and two RBI on the week. Goreham only had two hits during the week but, he accounted for four RBI, including a long home-run against the Angels at the East Cobb Complex.

Troy Salvatore came up clutch in the opening-game against the Florida Pokers, hitting a 2-out, 3-RBI, triple which broke open a 1-1 game and gave the Seadogs the victory.

Matt Sheehan made the defensive play of the tournament, chasing down a foul ball from his catchers position to the opposing dugout and hanging on to the ball despite colliding with Brendan Doonan.

The 16-U Seadogs wrapped up their season at the CABA World Series tournament held at the East Cobb Complex in Marietta, GA. After going 2-2 in pool play, the Seadogs advanced to the Classic bracket of the tournament. They won their first two preliminary games before advancing to the final eight, single-elimination bracket. They defeated the Wichita Hustlers in the quarterfinal before losing to the East Cobb Cubs on a walk-off single in an extremely close and entertaining game.

The game of the week was the rain-shortened contest against the Bayside Yankees. The team had the first seven batters reach, six of them on hits, en route to a 10-run first-inning, their biggest of the season.

The team wrapped up the season, against the best competition with a 23-8-1 record.

Wins were collected from Matt Goreham (2), Jesse Loughlin, Brendan Doonan and Demetri Monovoukas.

Goreham was once again outstanding on the hill as he threw two complete game efforts against the Mentium A’s and in the quarterfinals against the Hustlers. His effort for the week resulted in 14 IP, 3 ER, 12 H, 2 BB, and 14 K.

Loughlin was the beneficiary of three double-plays as he settled down to defeat Team Illinois. He surrendered a lead-off home run on the first pitch of the game but, shut down Illinois over the next 6 innings of work.

Doonan threw a no-hitter against Krew Baseball in a run-rule shortened victory. He threw 5 innings, striking out 5 and walking three.

Monovoukas collected the shortest complete-game victory in history throwing just 2.1 innings against the Bayside Yankees before the game was called and declared official due to rain.

The bats came alive for the Seadogs in the final week of the season. Troy Salvatore was 8-17 with a homerun and 5 RBI.

Kyle Silva went 6-19 with four doubles and 11 RBI including going 2-2 in one inning of plate appearances against Bayside, driving in four runs. In the game against Puerto Rico, trailing 3-0, Silva delivered three runs with two outs, by driving a ball to deep center for a double.

Brendan Doonan went 7-20 with a triple, homerun, and 8 RBI. His two-out, 3 RBI triple in the opening game against the A’s broke open a tied game. He hit three balls a combined estimate of 1100 feet yet he did not have a hit to show for it.

Jeff Cavanaro, who was instrumental in the team’s solid defensive showing in which they turned 7 double plays during the week, also contributed with a homerun.

The coaches would like to thank the players for their hard work and dedication throughout the year as well as the parents for their efforts.
