12 BLUES Crowned NEAAU Champs!

Will O'Sullivan and the Seadogs Celebrate

June 23, 2008

The 12 BLUES won the NEAAU Tournament Championship by defeating the Legends NAVY and Team Nokona on back to back days last week. On Wednesday they topped the Legends NAVY 6-1 and on Thursday they finished off their championship run with a dramatic 5-4 win over Team Nokona.

Below are the weekend results.

12U BLUE

Seadogs 6, Legends NAVY 1

In the semi-final game on Wednesday at Nokona Field in Ashland, Jesse Feldstein was sharp on the mound in a complete game effort. The big righthander allowed just five hits while fanning eight and walking just three. "It was a great clutch effort," gushed Coach Manders, especially considering the Legends scored twenty runs on the Seadogs in an earlier game. The steady offensive attack whittled away at the Legends with one in the first, two in the second and three in the fifth. Will O'Sullivan led the attack, going two for two with 3 RBI. Steve Gerhart had a hit, walked twice and scored three runs.

Seadogs 5, Team Nokona 4

The Seadogs came up with a pair of runs in the top of the sixth and closer Will O'Sullivan fanned two straight hitters with runners on second and third to close things out. Pinch runner Sean Scales escaped a rundown between third and home to score the tie-breaking run before Sammy Ballerini delivered a towering double off the fence in left to score Gus Culpo with the game winner. Starting pitcher Evan Morris had two hits as did reliever Gus Culpo. Ethan Forrest made the play of the game with a diving catch of a slicing liner in the first.

The Excitement Shows as the Seadogs Advance to the Finals

The 13U BLUES won five straight games from Thursday to Sunday and will play the Mass Pride at Strong Field on Wednesday at 5:30 in the NEAAU Championship game.

Seadogs 6, NE Navigators 2

In the first day of NE pool play, the Dogs used four pitchers (Kevin Murphy, Joey Guarino, Donny May and Sammy Falkson) to secure the win. Falkson (suicide squeeze) and Guarino (double, 2 RBI) also helped the offense. Vinny Scifo made a couple of excellent plays from his SS position.

Saturday Pool Play

Seadogs 11, Ruffnecks 3

Danny Dougherty led the way with a single, double, HR, and three RBI. Cam Hanley had three hits and three RBI, Tim Sullivan added a two-run single and Todd MacDonald collected two hits. Vin Scifo pitched well.

Seadogs 11, NE Heat 2

Joey Guarino pitched five strong innings to get the win. Dougherty added another two run bomb. Johnny Adams collected two hits, while Sullivan, Hanley and Sean Heelen each had RBIs.

Sunday Quarterfinals

Seadogs 6, Ramblers 1

Donny May worked four gutsy innings on the mound and Kevin Murphy came on to pitch the final three frames. Scifo and Sullivan turned a beautiful 6-4-3 double play to escape a one-out, bases loaded jam in the fifth and Justin Lloyd was outstanding in center field all day. Tommy Landry led the offense with three hits and two RBI. Joe Manni and Dougherty also collected big RBIs.

Sunday Semifinals

Seadogs 5, NE Firebirds 4

Sammy Falkson pitched 5 1/3 innings of excellent baseball. The first two batters of the game scored and that is all Falkson would allow. Heelen came on to pitch excellent relief in a pressure packed situation. Scifo was outstanding at shortstop, making a couple of plays from deep in the hole. He also delivered the first two runs with an RBI single in the first. Sullivan added a big suicide squeeze bunt and Murphy had a key RBI double. Falkson collected two hits, including a perfectly executed hit and run single.

14U

The 14U Seadogs split a pair of doubleheaders with the RI Tides and then the NE Nationals.

Seadogs 5, RI Tides 4

Trailing 4-1 in the bottom of the sixth, the 'Dogs fought back for a 5-4 win with the game winner coming in on Kevin Ballerini's squeeze. Alex Connolly tossed a complete game for the win.

RI Tides 7, Seadogs 6

Dan King's two-run double gave the 'Dogs a 6-4 lead before the Tides scored three times in the bottom of the seventh for a walk-off win.

Seadogs 9, NE Nationals 8

Alex Way's fifth inning grand slam evened things at six and Dan King's run producing squeeze bunt in the seventh ended the game in walk-off fashion. Chris Hoyt had two hits and scored twice while Andrew Vandini, Craig Hanley and Jake Connelly shared mound duties.

NE Nationals 13, Seadogs 6

The Nationals survived two lightning and rain delays to capture the nightcap. Kevin Ballerini had two hits.

11U BLUE vs 11U GOLD

At the 11 year old age level this was Antietam, Appomattox, Gettsyburg or Bull Run. SSBC Blue met SSBC Gold at Norwood's Mercer Field on Saturday morning. True, there were no brother against brother Civil War type matches, but there were an abundance of friends/buddies/pals vs friends/buddies/pals with year long bragging rights at stake. Blue won it, 7-6, requiring a four run explosion in the bottom of the 9th after trailing most of the game to take the "W" and avoid the upset.

Gold starter, Eric Peterson worked a magnificent six innings, allowing just one run on two hits, striking out eight including six in a row from the second into the fourth inning while facing the minimum of three batters in each of his last five innings of work. First baseman, Chris DeGiacomo, was a problem for Blue pitchers throughout the game going three-for-four with a triple, two RBI and a walk. Colin McGillivray drove in two runs and Mason Johnson brought in another for Gold as they went to the bottom of the ninth with a 6-3 lead before the game-winning rally by Blue.

It started with Anthony Conte's walk, progressed with A. J. Ferrara's one out base-hit, was kept alive by an infield error to make it 6-5. Austin Salkind's single plated Cody Carr to tie it, 6-6, and Dylan Russo slammed the game-winner to right scoring Salkind. For Russo it was his second hit and second RBI of the game. Carr, the fifth and last pitcher for Blue, worked two innings earning his first win of the year.

16U BLUE

The 16U BLUES won two of three.

Ramblers 18U 4, Seadogs 3

An RBI double by Chris King and a two-run single by Shawn Heide gave the 'Dogs an early lead that they could not hold on to in Saturday's opening game loss.

Seadogs 8, Ramblers 1

Zack Smith (7 IP, 4 H, 7 K's) was dominant in a complete game effort to earn his first victory as a Seadog. Barrett O'Neill went two for three with 2 RBI and six stolen bases. King and Heide each had RBI singles.

Seadogs 13, NE Navigators 8

Matt Burgess won his first game as a member of the Seadogs in relief of Harry Bourikas who relieved Mike Dodakian. Barrett O'Neill continued his torrid start belting a three run homer. Mike Dodakian went two for two with two doubles and an RBI. Joey Hickey and Matt Rodriguez each went two for three with an RBI

13U GOLD

The 13U GOLD squad lost three straight in the NEAAU Super Division Tourney.

Mass Pride NATIONAL 3, Seadogs 1

The Mass Pride got a two-run single in the bottom of the sixth to break a 1-1 tie and defeat the Seadogs in the opening game of Pool Play on Thursday. Mike Lenane tossed six strong innings in defeat. Drew Saltmarsh's RBI single plated the lone Seadog run, while Brendan Craven had two hits.

South Shore Spartans 9, Seadogs 8

A five run top of the sixth gave the 'Dogs an 8-4 lead, but again they battled well and came up short. Rob Madden hurled five strong innings with eight K's and added two hits of his own. Danny White also added a pair of hits.

Dugout Dawgs 11, Seadogs 5

Justin Moy and Brody Loughlin each had three hits but it was not enough as the Dugout Dawgs bullpen shut down the Seadogs.
