Seadogs Locke and Freiman Post Great Seasons

Drew Locke

September 16, 2009

Two long time former Seadogs had phenomenal seasons in their professional baseball careers.

Weymouth's Drew Locke just missed the Triple Crown this season playing for the Corpus Christi Hooks, Houston Astros' AA team. Locke led the Texas league in RBIs with 109, batting average at .338 and just missed leading the league in homeruns, coming in fourth with 20. He was also voted onto the Texas league All-Star team in late August after setting the Hooks single season RBI record in just his first season in AA ball. A late season injury prevented him from setting the franchise record for hits in a season, held by current major leaguer Hunter Pence.

Locke traces his baseball roots back to South Shore Baseball Club, saying he joined the club when he was just 8 years old. He then went on to play for the Seadogs when he was 13, 14, 15 and 16, and he watched his team steadily improve each year, ultimately winning the bronze medal at the 16 year old National AAU Championship game at Jacobs Field in Cleveland. Aside from his Seadogs career, Locke also played for BC High and then made the natural transition onto the field for Boston College after graduating high school. After four years at Boston College, Locke was drafted in the 19th round by the LA Dodgers organization in 2005. This season marked his first as an outfielder in the Astros organization.

All his success is bittersweet though, as Locke ended the season with a fractured left wrist after being hit by a pitch in late August. Despite the setback, the future looks bright for this former Seadog and minor league All-Star.

Nate Freiman

Nate Freiman of Wellesley is the other veteran Seadog who had an outstanding campaign. After setting records at Duke University, Freiman was drafted by the San Diego Padres and reported to the Eugene Emeralds (Oregon) of the short-season Northwest League. There Freiman hit .294 with 11 HRS and 68 RBI. He led the league in RBI and total bases while finishing second in homeruns.

The 6'8" Freiman was a Seadog throughout his career and also played in the Cape Cod baseball league. In the fall he attended the Padres Instructional League for top prospects in Arizona.
